I love Whittredge's work and I've always been attracted to this particular work. It portays the Flatiron rock formation outside Boulder CO with Long's Peak in the distance. I have researched this view and I believe it was actually painted on South Boulder Creek in the vicinity just east of Boulder CO. You can not get this viewpoint from the Platte River, it is to far away. Of course, Whittredge could have fabricated this compostion. I am going to scout locations in the South Boulder Creek area to see if I can replicate the view today.
